Why foil-wrapped strips

PetTest test strip in its easy-open foil wrapper next to a PetTest meter

Strips in a vial have a problem that has nothing to do with quality. It is the clock. Open the vial and the maker tells you to throw out whatever is left after 90 days. If your cat gets tested once a day, or once every few days when things are stable, you end up paying for strips you never use.

  • Each strip stays sealed until you need it
  • Good until the date printed on the box, not 90 days after opening
  • Flat wrappers fit in the meter case
  • Easy-open foil, no scissors

How to test your dog or cat

Testing sites for drawing blood on a cat and a dog for PetTest strips

Cats usually give a drop from the edge of the ear. Dogs have more options: the ear, the inner upper lip, a carpal pad, or the elbow callus on a bigger dog. Your veterinarian will show you the spot that works for your pet, and the diagram covers the rest.

  1. Load the strip

Tear open one wrapper and push the strip into your PetTest meter. The meter switches on by itself.

  2. Get a drop of blood

Use the spot your veterinarian showed you. Most people use the edge of the ear. The inner lip and a paw pad also work. A lancing device with PetTest lancets makes this quick.

  3. Fill the strip

Touch the tip of the strip to the drop. The clear window at the tip fills when the strip has pulled in enough blood.

  4. Read and log

The number appears in about five seconds. Write it down and throw the strip away. One strip, one test.

The strips measure blood glucose and nothing else. Your veterinarian sets the testing schedule and explains what the numbers mean for your pet.

Works with both PetTest meters

PetTest blood glucose test strips for dogs and cats with the PetTest Classic meter

These strips are made for the PetTest Diabetes Monitoring System for Dogs and Cats. Both meter versions take the same strip, so one box covers either meter. Stores spell the brand PetTest or Pet Test, and some file the strips under Advocate; it is the same box every time. What does not fit are Advocate test strips from the company's human lines, such as Redi-Code.

Strips from AlphaTrak, VetMate, iPet or human glucose meters will not work in a PetTest meter, and PetTest strips will not work in theirs. If you own a different meter, you need that meter's strips.

Storage and safety

  • Keep the box at room temperature in a dry place. Do not refrigerate or freeze it.
  • Leave each strip in its wrapper until the moment you test.
  • Use the strips before the expiration date on the box.
  • For in vitro diagnostic use with dogs and cats only. Not for human use. Keep out of reach of children.
  • A reading that does not match how your pet looks is a reason to call your veterinarian, not to guess.

Common questions about PetTest test strips

Do PetTest test strips expire, and how long are they good for after opening?

Yes, use them before the date printed on the box. The 90 day rule after opening is for strips in a vial. Each PetTest strip is sealed in its own foil, so opening one does nothing to the other 49. Keep the box dry at room temperature and skip any strip with a torn wrapper.

Are glucose test strips universal? Will these fit another meter?

No. PetTest strips work only in the PetTest Classic and PetLink+ meters, and strips from AlphaTrak, VetMate or a human meter will not read in a PetTest. A human meter is not a workaround either: it is calibrated for human blood, not a dog's or a cat's.

How do I check my dog's or cat's blood sugar at home with these strips?

Push a strip into the meter, prick the test spot with a lancet, touch the strip tip to the drop until the clear window fills, and read the number in about five seconds. The meter needs 0.3 mcL, a drop the size of a pinhead. Pet diabetes care runs on routine, so test at the times your veterinarian asked for and write every reading down.

Where do I draw the blood on a dog or a cat?

The edge of the ear works for both. Dogs also give a drop from the inner upper lip, a carpal pad, or the elbow callus on a big dog. Warm the spot first, and change spots between tests so nothing gets sore. The diagram higher on this page shows them all.

What is a normal blood sugar reading for a dog or a cat?

There is no single number. Labs use different ranges, a diabetic pet has a target set by its veterinarian, and a stressed cat reads high at the clinic for no other reason. Judge the pattern over the day, not one reading, and call the vet before touching the insulin dose.
